Solar Sunshades have recently completed their latest commercial project at Archbishop McGrath Catholic High School near Bridgend, South Wales. Solar were awarded the contract to install a variety of products across the school, including motorised roller blinds, system 40 roller blinds, full blackout roller blinds and coloured window film.
Archbishop McGrath Catholic High School is a newly built, state of the art facility located in Brackla, near Bridgend. Designed by the architects at HLM in Cardiff, the school cost £20 million pounds to build and features a spectacular triple height atrium entrance. In addition to this, the school encompasses latest technology sport and leisure facilities, which are made available to the public in the evenings and on weekends. The main school comprises three storeys, and accommodates 750 pupils ages 11 to 18, including sixth formers.
Solar were delighted to be involved with such an outstanding project within the local community and we endeavoured to create the highest quality products with maximum functionality, in keeping with the ethos of the project.
A motorised roller blind was fitted over the reception area allowing receptionist staff to operate the blind at the touch of a button, preventing excess glare and sunlight exposure created by the extensive glass fronted building.
System 40 roller blinds were installed in classrooms throughout the school, allowing teachers to control heat and light quickly and effectively throughout the day. Total blackout blinds were fitted in the science laboratories, allowing experiments to be carried out effectively without sunlight when required.
Coloured window film was implemented into the school’s prayer room, removing excess light and glare, whilst still maintaining the decorative touch required for places of worship.
Solar carried out the project in conjunction with contractors JB Leadbitter, ensuring that every aspect of the job was completed on time, on budget and as expected. This ensured that all parties were very pleased with the outcome of the project as the school looks fantastic.
Upon the completion of the building of the school, Cardiff based HLM Architects were awarded the Gold Medal for Architecture, supported by the Design Commission for Wales at the National Eisteddfod of Wales. In addition they were also given the Plaque of Merit and Architectural Scholarship, supported by the royal Society of Architects in Wales – A very fitting award for a superb project!
